UTSA Student Death 2024: According to university officials, a University of Texas at San Antonio student who died Wednesday morning in a campus parking garage most likely committed suicide. The deadly incident happened at the UTSA Bauerle Garage.
At 10:21 a.m. Wednesday, UTSA reported a police presence at Bauerle Road Garage, located near the UTSA Main Building and Business Building. The institution advised students to avoid the area.
In an update around 11 a.m., UTSA said it was “deeply saddened” to report that a student had died in the garage on Wednesday morning. UTSA President Taylor Eighmy provided additional information and highlighted mental health resources in an email to students, professors, and staff that was published on the university’s website Wednesday afternoon.
“With a heavy heart, I’m writing to share that we’ve lost a member of our doctoral student community, likely by suicide,” he told me. “I know an unexpected loss like this can feel overwhelming and may impact you differently; however, please know that you are not alone, and support is available.”
The student’s death comes months after a male student died by apparent suicide in May, according to a letter Eighmy issued to the college community at the time.
UTSA students can access counseling services through Wellness 360, TimelyCare, or by calling the 24/7 crisis hotline at (210) 458-4140. Faculty and staff can seek assistance using the iConnectYou app or the Employee Assistance Program, which has a helpline at (888) 993-7650.
